The C96 was introduced by the German Army during WWI as a reserve weapon, originally in the original 7.63mm Mauser caliber. Due to ammunition standardization with the Pistol 08, the caliber was changed to 9 mm Luger for German Army weapons in 1916, with a red painted "9" on the grip panels to distinguish it. The model was given the name C96/16.
