Demibloc barrels, concave engine-turned rib, brass front sight, ejectors, third grip, bar-action sidelocks, sear, disc-set strikers and gas release valves, bright bascule, reinforced barrel flanks, automatic sliding tang safety with gold inlaid "S", double trigger, fine arabesque engraving with rose bouquets, grained walnut stock, straight diamond-shaped grip, leather buttplate, forend with Anson push-rod, breech very slightly wobbly when forend removed, buttstock with some small dents on surface, lock screw not original, restored to condition 3.
Apparently assembled from 2 shotguns shortly after purchase, re-regulated and re-proofed together in Vienna in 1918. In 1989 the chamber was changed to 16/70 and again re-proofed.
The company was originally founded in 1836 by Mathias Novotny in Vienna. After his death, the successful business was sold to Johann Springer and further expanded by him. The Austrian emperor also became a regular customer, and in 1872 awarded the company the title of k.u.k. Chamber supplier. In the 1930s, the company was also awarded the title of supplier to the princely court of Monaco. In 1955, the production of weapons was discontinued and the company concentrated on trade.
Due to the continuing demand for Springer weapons, the production of Mauser rifles and, since 2022, sidelock s/s shotguns was resumed.
