The Lee-Enfield system dates back to 1888, with the American Lee contributing the magazine, and the Royal Ordnance Factory at Enfield contributing the breech. This latest version, No. 4 Mk. 2, was manufactured well into the 1950s and used worldwide until the 1980s, especially in the former British colonies. Along with the Mauser 98 and Mosin-Nagant systems, it is one of the three leading military bolt-action rifle systems in the history of arms.
