Today, the Herstal group has 2 main fields: Fabrique National (formerly d'armes de Guerre) Herstal for the production of police and military weapons. On the other hand, Browning Arms with its subsidiary Winchester as a producer of hunting and sporting weapons.
The famous designer John Moses Browning started his world famous design of the noted self-loading pistol during his employment at FN, which was expanded after his death by his colleagues Dieudonné Saive with the double-stack magazine and completed as the GP38, better known as HP, Hi-Power or High Power. Other famous designs from the JM Browning era include the Auto-5 self-loading shotgun, the .50 BMG cartridge (Browning Machine Gun), the BAR, and the M2 machine gun (introduced in the Austrian Army as the "üsMG", among many others).
In WW2, FN was a supplier to the Wehrmacht through the German occupation, and after the end again steadily expanded its list of influential designs such as the FN FAL, Scar, Minimi, P90 or "Five-SeveN".
With the acquisition of Winchester in 1981, Browning's early base of operations also returned to the FN group.
The Browning Arms Company was originally founded to protect JM Browning's numerous patents and is a major licensor for Colt, Remington, Miroku and Winchester, for example.
